Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation and cognitive function in aging: a meta-analysis
Yurko-Mauro K, et al.
Evidence is still building up
Summary
A meta-analysis of RCTs examining DHA/EPA supplementation on age-related cognitive decline and dementia risk. Preventive effects in cognitively normal older adults were limited, but significant improvements in cognitive function maintenance were found in populations with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
Key findings
- 1
DHA supplementation significantly helps maintain/improve cognitive function in older adults with MCI
- 2
Preventive effects in cognitively normal older adults are small and inconsistent
- 3
DHA (~900 mg/day) is considered the most effective component for memory and learning function
- 4
Evidence for cognitive enhancement in younger and middle-aged adults is currently insufficient
