Definition

The Romanian deadlift (RDL) is a posterior-chain exercise in which you lower a barbell through a hip hinge — pushing the hips back — and stand up by extending the hips. Unlike a conventional deadlift, you do not reset from the floor; the knee stays in slight, roughly fixed flexion while the hips drive the movement. Range of motion is set by hamstring flexibility and by how far you can keep the spine neutral. It is often chosen to build the hamstrings and gluteus maximus, or to learn the hip-hinge pattern.

How it differs from a conventional deadlift

A conventional deadlift starts concentrically from the floor with substantial knee flexion and extension, and relatively more quadriceps involvement. The RDL starts with the lowering (eccentric) phase from the top, with little knee movement, biasing the hip extensors (hamstrings and gluteus maximus). Because the target and the pattern being trained differ, they are treated as separate exercises.

Demand on the hip extensors peaks at the bottom, where the torso is most inclined and the bar sits farthest from the hips (the hamstrings are most lengthened), and falls toward the upright lockout. It is a classic case of loading the stretched position. This is a conceptual figure with no scale.

Common misconceptions

Myth 1

The RDL is a lower-back (erector spinae) exercise

What research shows

The prime movers are the hip extensors (hamstrings, gluteus maximus); the erector spinae works mainly as an isometric stabiliser holding a neutral spine. It is not a movement where you 'lift with the lower back'.

Verdict:A misconception. The lower back is a stabiliser here, not a prime mover.
Myth 2

The deeper you lower — all the way to the floor — the better, always

What research shows

There is a principle that loading at longer muscle lengths favours hypertrophy, but RDL range is set by hamstring flexibility and by keeping the spine neutral. Lowering past your flexibility by rounding the back departs from the goal (stretch loading of the posterior chain).

Verdict:It depends. The principle is to reach maximal stretch within the range where you can keep a neutral spine.

  • Range of motion varies with individual hamstring flexibility; work within the range where you can keep the spine neutral and controlled.
  • Stop and consult a professional if you feel sharp pain or discomfort in the lower back, hamstrings, or knees.
  • If you have a history of lower-back problems, adjust range of motion and load especially carefully.
