Definition
The flat dumbbell press is performed lying supine on a horizontal bench, pressing a dumbbell in each hand up over the chest. Unlike a barbell, the arms move independently, allowing a deeper range of motion while each arm must control its own path. It is often chosen to correct left–right asymmetry or as an alternative for lifters whose bottom range is limited with a barbell.
Muscle-length profile
The pectoralis major is most lengthened at the bottom, where the dumbbells sit lowest (shoulder horizontal abduction). Because you can descend deeper than a barbell allows, loading the stretched position is a defining feature of this exercise.

Resistance peaks at the bottom, where the pectoralis major is most lengthened (horizontal abduction), and falls toward lockout — a classic example of loading the stretched position.

Common misconceptions
Dumbbells 'hit harder' than a barbell, so the chest grows faster
Range of motion and stability demands differ, but higher muscle activity (EMG) does not prove faster growth. Comparisons must be judged by longitudinal studies, where differences are often small.
The deeper you lower, the better — always
There is a benefit to stretch loading, but excessive descent can stress the rotator cuff depending on shoulder mobility and history. The principle is to reach maximal stretch within your own range.
